CITY OF BREVARD TO CELEBRATE OPENING OF MARY C JENKINS COMMUNITY CENTER

[BREVARD, N.C. October 19, 2022] – The public is invited to attend the grand opening of the Mary C Jenkins Community Center (MCJCC) on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 10 AM. The event will mark the opening of the City of Brevard’s newest facility, located at 221 Mills Avenue, Brevard, NC, designed and built in conjunction with community partners from Brevard’s Rosenwald community and historic Mary C Jenkins Community Center.

The approximately $2.5M facility replaces a previous facility on the same site, which was abandoned due to age and condition in 2018. At the time, the historic MCJCC board of directors and City of Brevard formed a partnership to replace the facility with a modern one that would be accessible to Rosenwald neighbors and the public at large. The partnership will continue after the facility opens. Though the facility is owned and operated by the City, MCJCC will help coordinate events and activities there. The building is available for use by all individuals and non-profits for a small fee.

“I am so proud of the City of Brevard and the MCJCC Board working together to achieve our shared vision of a new community and cultural center,” said Mayor Maureen Copelof. “This beautiful space is a tribute to the history of Brevard’s African-American community and a precious space where people can connect, grow and continue to build community connections.”

“The vast majority of toil and effort to make this a reality was done before I got here,” said City Manager Wilson Hooper, “but I’ve got to say that the City’s willingness to build and provide accessible and inclusive amenities shows that it is interested in building trust amongst all its residents, and that’s an attractive thing for folks looking to make their home here.”

The facility features a large gathering room, kitchen with commercial appliances, two small meeting rooms, and a covered patio space.
