On Sunday, August 13, NCDOT will begin the process of milling and repaving Main Street, the latest milestone in the Main Street Streetscape Project. Repaving work will be broken up into two sections: Oaklawn Street to Broad Street and Broad Street to Elm Bend Road. Contractors will mill down the current road surface, add new induction loops at intersections, and then repave the street. NCDOT estimates that work on each section of Main Street will take approximately two to three weeks apiece. Permanent restriping of on-street parking spaces will also be performed by NCDOT.
In an effort to minimize disruptions during regular business hours, most work will happen at night. While drivers should expect some partial and full lane closures during construction, the contractor does not anticipate any total road closures. Crews will begin work at the intersection of Oaklawn Street and West Main Street on Sunday, August 13. Accordingly, that section of West Main will become a “no parking” area, and overnight parking on Saturday, August 12, is discouraged. Cars left in the construction zone on August 13 will be subject to towing. City staff will keep residents and visitors apprised of project developments over the coming weeks.
