The City of Brevard is searching for a Public Works Director who is a strong leader and strategic planner to oversee the Department effectively and efficiently.   In addition to the day-to-day management of the various functions of the department, the position is a key leadership team member. The Director must excel in project management and place an emphasis on responsiveness and accountability.         

 

Reporting to the City Manager, the Public Works Director is responsible for project management, budget management, purchasing, training, and overall management and oversight of the department.   The department is comprised of seven divisions that include administration, streets maintenance, sanitation & recycling, building and grounds, vehicle maintenance, water distribution and sewer collections.   

The department budget is over $5.6 million, which is split amongst the various divisions and across different funds (general, sanitation, and water & sewer utility fund).   The department has a total of 39 full-time personnel. In addition, the department is responsible for several projects currently funded with American Rescue Plan dollars.   

 

Key Priorities:

  • Oversee the management of complex construction and repair projects from start to finish.  
  • Serve as a team member with other departments as necessary to accomplish the City’s goals and objectives.  
  • Organize the work environment, processes, and tasks so that goals are met with efficient use of time, talent and materials.

 

Requires graduation from an accredited college/university with degree in civil or environmental engineering, public administration, or related field, and considerable experience in a responsible managerial position in the public works or utilities field, with considerable personnel management responsibilities, or equivalent combination education and experience.   Professional Engineer is preferred.
