Railroad Avenue Extension

Typical Cross Section

Railroad Avenue Extension is a North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) project that aims to reduce congestion on Asheville Highway and Broad Street by providing local traffic an alternative route. The project would primarily follow existing roads and add some new road segments to make necessary connections.

The resulting road will be a low-speed, two-lane, local-traffic street complete with bike lanes and sidewalks that would connect Asheville Highway to Rosman Highway on the western side of the city. The reduced local traffic on Broad Street/Asheville Highway will help relieve congestion on US Highways 64 & 276.

NCDOT first identified this project as a part of their 1997 Thoroughfare Plan. Subsequent Thoroughfare Plans in 2003, 2005 and 2007 retained the project for future funding.
