Here are three MUST DO actions when developing in the floodplain:
1. Get a permit. The City of Brevard will help you obtain a Floodplain Development Permit, and explain the regulations before you begin construction. This will prevent costly mistakes.
2. Know your substantial damage rules. Substantial repairs or improvements means any repairs, reconstruction, rehabilitation, addition, or other modification or improvement of a structure taking place during any one-year period for which the cost equals or exceeds 50 percent of the market value of the structure.
3. Erect silt fencing on downward slopes adjacent to disturbed areas to protect streams and prevent runoff from leaving the jobsite.
